How does a 90 year old company in a “mature downtown” stay fresh without breaking the bank? Wolfe’s Camera in Topeka, Kansas gave the team a free hand to “make it fresh”. By using lots of creativity, plenty of brain power, hours of discussion and a few gallons of paint both the store and the team were revitalized. Creative displays, brighter colors and more open spaces created a shopper’s dream, a place to wander, browse and dream what can be done with their pictures. The transcript contains pictures of before/after as well as some of the stores new services displays. Listen as Sondra Harkness shares her story in this week’s DIMAcast at www.DIMAcast.com

Reaching out to help others is good citizenship and can be good for business. That wasn’t Precision Camera’s motivation but it was the result. By partnering with the Boot Campaign Precision Camera was able to generate more traffic to their Expo while setting a record for Boot Campaign’s sales. Proceeds from Boot Campaign go to support returning military personnel and/or their families. The campaign was started in 2009 by five “boot girls” who met at a fund raiser and felt they could “make a difference” for those warriors who served their country and were now in need. (note: the Boot Campaign was started long before the Veteran’s Administration scandal was public knowledge – the “boot girls” saw part of the problem with VA and found a way to help the impacted personnel and families.) Hear how this event came about, the result and pick up ideas how you can help those around you while establishing your company’s brand among your target customers on this week’s DIMAcast. You can listen to the audio podcast and/or download the transcript with photographs at www.DIMAcast.com

You think it’s not possible, but it is . . . one store, one location that four years in a row is considered the best electronics store in the country by Consumer Electronics, beating out all the national chains and perceived “powerhouses”. Consistently voted one of the best places to work in Illinois. One building that houses 1,250 employees catering to the ever need of Abt Electronics customers. It’s a great story with some plain Midwest wisdom along with Chicago flare that causes consumers to flock to Abt to buy everything from low end starter kitchen appliances to the $500,000 David Abt Home Theater – which has an additional $100,000 ad on. It’ the kind of store where you would like to shop or work or own . . . Listen in to the DIMAcast while Bill McCurry interviews Michael Abt, third generation of the Abt family to operate this fantastic retailer.  The transcript includes pictures of the store.

Low-cost is a relative term when it comes to medium-format photography and the larger sensors it requires, but Ricoh Imaging’s newest SLR will be “only” $8,500 — a category-low, the company says.
The Pentax 645Z SLR features a 51-megapixel sensor, with a 43.8mm x 32.8mm imaging area that is approximately 1.7 times larger than that of a 35mm full-size sensor. It captures three frames per second.
In this episode of the DIMAcast, Ricoh Imaging executive vice president Jim Malcolm tells us how the company was able to bring such a more affordable model to market, and what it means for pro shooters in particular.
